DEPRESSION AT ITS PEAK

DEPRESSION AT ITS PEAK

We all has gone through depression and some of us are still going through that. Me, for one, has suffered from depression since a tender age, specifically at the age of eight. Our medical practitioners says there are no definite reason for the up springing of depression in one's mind, but of course, something can't grow without having a root.

I'll be specifically talking about depression and its types. Depression is a psychological ailment that negatively affects how you think, act and respond towards the things around you. It has different types of it.

1. Clinical depression: This is also known as Major Depression. It is a mental health disorder characterised by persistently depressed mood and loss of interest in activities, causing abnormal attitudes from the affected. If is chronic and can last for a number of years.  Unfortunately, 1.5 million cases has been found in Nigeria which usually comes every year.

The affected is adviced to go through lab tests and visit a medical personnel.

2. Persistent depressive disorder: It is also called Dysthymia. It is a mild but long last form of depression. Unusual behaviours are hardly caused by this disorder, it only last and causes a lot of discomfort in one's mental state. Unfortunately, 1.3 million cases per year are found in Nigeria.

It is adviced the affected should visit a medical professional constantly.

3. Bipolar disorder: This is also called Manic Depression. This is always associated with serious mood swings ranging from depressive lows to high manics. It requires a constant medical diagnosis, it is chronic and can last for years. (This is for those who suffers from mood swings.)

4. Bipolar II disorder: A less severe type of bipolar disorder characterised by depressive and hypomaniac episodes. More than 100 thousands cased are found in  Nigeria. Lab tests are rarely required, change of environment and a constant intake of water is needed. It is chronic and it can last for years.

5. Postnatal depression: Also called PPD. It repeatedly occurs after child birth. Even though it's not a serious range of depression, it is common as 1.5 cases are been found in women that just gave birth. It resolves within month with the help of medical professionals.

Depression is of course not something to be taken lightly. Most of the ones that faces depression has things in common; apathy from socialising and solitude.

Let's always remember to check on our friends, fathers and mothers. God be with you. Lots of love.
